Its Crazy Hair Day at our kids school today, as part of World's Greatest Shave. Normally they get their hair sprayed at school but today they wanted to do something a little bit different at home. Miss 9 even borrowed some pipe cleaners from the teacher, and then drew me a diagram, so we could create the "antennae" look that she was going for! Master 7 didn't want to miss out either, opting for multiple mini pony-tails in blue and green... The best part was when we arrived at school and saw everyone else's fun hairstyles, and the giggles around the school as everyone checked out each other's efforts! Plus its all for a great cause helping to raise funds for blood cancer research :) We had an absolutely glorious afternoon for Jo & Rob's family session here at Tamborine recently. We had the most beautiful afternoon light filtering through the trees - and it was so much fun working with these guys! Piggy back rides, tickle fights, and lots of love and laughter was the name of the game for this session... Thanks guys for a fun afternoon! So we've been sweltering this week and I've been dreading sitting in my little "hot box" of an office... anyone that's been to my studio at Tamborine may have noticed that our house on the property is a little A-frame... "little" being the key word! We only have 2 bedrooms at the moment (big plans to extend) and therefore the only space for my office is upstairs - right under that hot tin roof! Last year was horrendous, I couldn't work in the middle of the day as it was like sitting in a sauna (not good for the poor computer fan either) and that led to late night editing sessions when it was cooler, just so I could catch up on work. Which led to much less sleep and a much crankier mummy! A few weeks ago, hubby installed an air conditioner upstairs, but we had to wait for the electrician to come around and wire it up... so its been sitting there taunting me as the days got hotter and hotter. Finally we got it all wired up on Saturday, so I've been powering through my editing this week in air conditioned comfort - heaven!!! I've been enjoying the cool so much that I've actually had to consider putting a jumper on haha!! Now if I could just get a dishwasher installed, I would be stoked!! Today's blog features some beautiful families from my Winter Mini Sessions! Why do I do mini sessions in winter? Simple really - that glorious LIGHT!! That golden glow just adds such a beautiful feel to your family images... I love it! Here are some favourites from these sessions: If you enjoyed this, you might also like:

Tamborine Photographer Scenic Rim Photography Family Photographer Gold Coast Logan Beenleigh Family Photography Yarrabilba Logan Village Jimboomba Family Photos Studio photos family portraits relaxed family photographer Natural family photographer Once upon a time, we only used to have 5 TV channels and I'm pretty sure we could always find something to watch. Now we have dozens of channels, with everything being repeated endlessly... and I don't know about you, but we are constantly saying that there is nothing on TV!! So the other week, my husband decided we should try watching a series on Netflix, and settled on "Vikings". I am actually a massive fan of shows like this - I love Game of Thrones (he doesn't) and I love period movies with lots of big medieval battles and violence and blood. But I didn't anticipate how much I would get into it, hubby included - and we've become a little bit addicted to the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok and friends. But the one BIG problem is that, although we've tried to pace ourselves and just watch one episode a night, we're now coming to the end... - so WHAT THEN?? What do we watch next? Any suggestions will be gratefully received! Fibi and her gorgeous little man Ryan came to Tamborine for a mini session recently - this very handsome little guy was a little shy at first, but once he started to have fun we were rewarded with that gorgeous big smile! He told me the most amazing stories too - it was so much fun! Here are a few of the favourites from this session: If you enjoyed this, you might also like:
Blog: Changes... Blog: Poo Patrol... Tamborine Family Photographer Family Portraits, Gold Coast photographer Scenic Rim, Beaudesert photographer Jimboomba family photographer Yarrabilba Family photo shoot Mr 6 achieved his final "star" on his reward chart the other night, and so he got to choose a prize from our prize box. His treasure of choice was a ruler which contains a calculator on top... fitting as been caught 'borrowing' my calculator from my desk on numerous occasions (and failing to return it) - so now he has his own and he's chuffed. Of course he took it to bed with him the first night... and then to school the next day to show his mates. But the thing about him having his own calculator is that he is now the KEEPER-OF-ALL-KNOWLEDGE... and he is quite pleased with his own wisdom. Every day, several times a day, he says: "Ask me a sum that you dont know the answer to!!" Me: "hmmm - ok... 376 + 187" Mr 6, with some serious concentration, plugs in the numbers... and then proudly reveals the answer: "563!!" He also just walks past and randomly says: "Hey mummy, did you know that 23 + 12 equals 35??!!" Just wait until he learns that if he types 5318008 and turns it upside down, he can write rude words on it ;) First birthdays are always a momentous occasion - and what better way to celebrate than with a cake smash!! Mum Stacey wanted to do some outdoor family shots as well as the studio cake smash, however little Layla-Rose ended up having a bit of a cold on the day - so we cut the session short and she came back the following week to complete outdoor portion of the session. We did still manage to capture some gorgeous smiles with her pink, white and gold theme - big sister Lilly also loved sharing the cake and showing miss Layla how its done - aren't they adorable? And then the following week it was big smiles all round as everyone was feeling better! We had fun exploring outside here at Tamborine, and capturing these special moments between sweet sisters and their lovely mum... The excitement levels have reached level 10 here last week... when miss 8 was told that I am taking her to see Katy Perry on Friday - her very first concert! (I had to wait until I was 17 to go to my first concert - which was The Cure, by the way - so I think she is one very lucky 8 year old!). She's loved Katy Perry for ages, always her favourite singer, so last year when we heard that she was coming I jumped at the chance to get some tickets with two lovely friends and their daughters - a girls night out! But keeping this a secret for a year has been tough!! I planted the seed a few weeks ago, when we heard the radio station talking about the upcoming tour. We started talking about it and she was all like: "Wait - what? She's coming HERE?" Me - "Yep! That would be an amazing concert, wouldn't it?" Miss 8 - "OH MY GOSH - CAN WE GO???" Me - "Oh sorry Bubba, I think the tickets sold out ages ago" Cue misery... (Am I a nasty mother for doing that??) So with less than two weeks to go, I gave her a challenge. She had 2 stars remaining on her star chart before she got to the "reward star". I told her if she achieved those 2 stars in one day, and it had to be a mammoth effort, she would receive an AMAZING reward. Well, she worked her butt off! She picked up dog poo, tidied her room (even vacuumed the floor without being asked), did some maths revision, made her own lunch, washed all the lunch dishes, and was just generally super helpful all day - so yes she earned her reward! The response? Think jumping up and down, clapping her hands, shrieking "YES!", and hugs for everyone. Totally worth it - cant wait to share this experience with her :) Beautiful mama-to-be Sara came to Tamborine for her maternity session recently - absolutely glowing and due to have twins!! The sun was playing a little game of hide-and-seek that day, so we ventured further down our property to the little dam - an area I dont often shoot at, for these images. Some of Sara's favourites: Not long afterwards, I got to meet these very precious twins, Matilda & Xavier! They spent a little time in the special care nursery, so they were 3 weeks and 1 day old at the time of their session - but still very sleepy and tiny! Posing twins can be a bit more of a challenge, but these two made it so easy and did everything I asked of them. Those sweet smiles and gorgeous twin cuddles made for many "awwww" moments during the session. Thanks so much Sara & Mitchell! I've been talking to friends recently about going clothes shopping... for me - not the kids! Its been a while and I have a few things on my list. But the realisation dawned on me yesterday that despite having a wardrobe full of clothes, I consistently wear the same things, week after week! And the things on my list to buy, are simply newer versions of things I already own! I pretty much have my own "mum-uniform" - jeans, long sleeve t-shirt, and the same jacket each and every day. I must have about a dozen pair of jeans, sometimes I might change it up by wearing a different kind of top, but essentially its the SAME...OLD...THING. Do you do this too? So this morning I challenged myself to come up with an outfit that was different to my standard mum-uniform. I had thought of wearing a summer dress with tights, but my eye was drawn to a long skirt which I've rarely ever worn - so I thought "Stuff it!" and put it on. Added some ankle boots, a denim jacket (also rarely worn) and the outfit was done. I must say, I feel quite self-conscious, but in a good way! I'm going to keep challenging myself to stay away from jeans this week, and see what else I can come up with! Alexis, Jayk & Kaia came for their maternity/family session at Tamborine earlier this year - we were blessed with beautiful, stunning afternoon light for this gorgeous family as they eagerly awaited the arrival of their little man! Here are a few of our favourites from this session: Soon after, their sweet little man Luca arrived! Our session in the studio was just perfect - big sister Kaia was amazing and so photogenic - just look at those eyes! Luca, just 9 days old on the day of his session, was a newborn superstar and did everything I asked of him, and more! From that button nose to those cute little toes... he was a joy to photograph! Alexis says: "Hilary did such an amazing job capturing our family in both a maternity and newborn photo shoot. She was so patient and kind with both kids and really took her time to get the perfect shots! Every single photo was beautiful, we can’t recommend her enough" Thank you Plotkin family for allowing me to capture these precious memories for you! If you enjoyed this, you might also like:
Blog: A Crossfit photoshoot... Blog: Bookweek - the lazy mum edition... At the moment, we're having a relatively low-key school holidays, and I'm totally fine with that. Last weekend we went away for the night with friends, so this week I just wanted to have a few "home days" to get some things accomplished. The kids aren't totally thrilled with home days though, so I tempted them with a couple of old movies that they've wanted to watch for ages... the dreaded MUSICAL! Hubby hates musicals so he just rolled his eyes when I mentioned them. In fact, he walked in while one of them was playing, and promptly turned around and walked back out again! So this week I've treated the kids to three all-time classics: Annie Mary Poppins The Sound of Music I have not watched Annie since I was about 10, so that was a bit of a trip down memory lane!! I love Mary Poppins too, but I was curious to see how they would cope with The Sound of Music... given how long it is and how a lot of the plot points would go over their heads... well they loved it! Master 6 was quite fidgety towards the end (but it IS a pretty long movie) and Miss 8 cringes whenever there is a kissing scene, but overall it was a great success! And much to hubby's disgust, we've all been walking around the house singing musical songs all week :) I loved hanging out with Shayne, Nick and Alyssia for their maternity/family session with Shayne's gorgeous bump! Miss Alyssia is the sweetest little thing and those shy smiles were just so priceless. We were treated to some stunning afternoon light too - check out these favourites! And then beautiful newborn Amelia arrived and it was time for her newborn session! We held this session in the comfort of their own home, which meant Alyssia could play with her toys and do her own thing when she wasn't needed. Newborn Amelia was quite alert and wasn't keen on sleeping unless she was very firmly wrapped, but we were still able to get plenty of variety in her session and lots of family combinations too! Shayne's kind words: "Hilary done our maternity and newborn photos. The photos were just amazing! She was very patient and made us feel very comfortable. My husband liked the fact Hilary was quick with the photos. I could not recommend Hilary enough for any photos that your wanting done." Thanks so much to Shayne for capturing these "behind the scenes" photos of me at work with little Amelia! Miss 8 has suddenly become the fountain of knowledge in our house, and quite frankly its making me feel inadequate! Its like the time we were watching Millionaire Hotseat and a question came up about Pablo Picasso. We were staring blankly at the TV when miss 8 pipes up: "Hmm, Pablo Picasso - wasn't he the inventor of cubism?" Hubby and I looked at each other and laughed! "Um, I have no idea!!". So we googled it, and yes, wouldn't you know it, he was the co-founder of the Cubist movement!! She is full of interesting information at the moment. I was getting something out of the oven the other day, using my rubber/plastic oven mitt - so she then told me all about thermal conductivity and that plastic was a good choice of material for an oven glove. Then I got a lesson on various materials that conduct heat - although her theory that a wooden oven glove would be awesome because of its low heat conductivity, has some obvious flaws! So when she asked me this week if I learned about "Alliteration" when I was at school, my first thought was "Shit! Whats alliteration again?" I had to confess I couldn't quite remember exactly what it was... but never fear, she was ready with pen and paper to give me some good examples that she'd learned. For the record (and for those who've also forgotten) - here's an example: Lazy Lizards Lying or Betty Botter bought some butter Do you have a smarty-pants at your place? Leonie and Kris came for their maternity session at Tamborine earlier this year, and what a gorgeous couple they are! It was beautiful to see so much happiness and excitement in their eyes as they awaited the arrival of their little one, gender unknown! Here are some of the favourites from this session: And then came the arrival of a beautiful baby girl, Heidi! Leonie chose to do the newborn session in the comfort of their own home, which is a great option if you'd like to be able to relax in your own environment, and be free to put on a load of washing or make some lunch while you wait! Heidi was 9 days old at her session - with just the most perfect little face, and she did everything I asked of her and more, she was amazing! I have also added a before-editing/after-editing image at the bottom of this post, for those who like to see how these images come together. Leonie says: "We had our maternity and newborn shoots with Hilary. Hilary was awesome to work with and was amazing with our little girl! We are so happy with how the photos turned out. Thank you!" Thank you guys, it was so lovely to meet you all! Things have been a little bit hectic around here lately and its been a while since I've had a chance to pop up a blog post - so I'm even more behind in blogging than I should be! I'm currently spending a few quiet, child-free hours on a Sunday by updating two months of work in MYOB (ugh, the joys of us both being self-employed...) getting stuck into my editing backlog, and updating my blog! Sarah, Mark and their beautiful kids came for a mini maternity session at Tamborine late last year, and we had absolutely glorious weather! My husband always like to keep the grass freshly mowed down in the back paddock, but I must admit I do like it when he HASN'T mowed, for that slightly longer, more rural feel as we had in this session. Love those gorgeous smiles from little Cora and Gus too, as they played in the afternoon sun. And then not longer afterwards, I got to meet cute little Teddy for his newborn session. The session was not without its hurdles though - a big storm rolled through the night before and we lost power, along with thousands of others in the neighbourhood. Thank goodness we have a big generator, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to do this session as planned. It was a hot and sticky day, but we were able to keep the studio at a nice comfortable temperature for everyone. Teddy -7 days old: We took our sheltered "country" kids for a day out in the big smoke last weekend... the day was originally going to be a beach day, but the showery weather saw us change our minds at the last moment and head to the city instead. We've always talked about taking them on a Citycat to see the city from the river perspective, and we finally did it! Miss 8 just loved being able to see the skyscrapers up close... she wears her excitement on her face and she was beaming. The ferry ride was a little fear that she needed to overcome (she's seen too many episodes of 'River Monsters' and heard too many stories of Bull Sharks in rivers) - but after the initial tears, she had the time of her life! Master 6 loved the river... loved the wind in his hair and loved pointing out all the cranes on the top of highrises. After getting caught in the rain, it was a quick bite to eat and then off to explore the museum for the afternoon. The kids are at a great age to enjoy these experiences, we really need to do this more often! We were blessed with some absolutely stunning afternoon light for Thayz's maternity session here at Tamborine! This gorgeous mumma was absolutely glowing - it was so much fun capturing her with these handsome boys... and these matching Celtics shirts at the end of the session was so cool, especially including a tiny little green romper for bub number 3! Then before too long, their handsome little Samuel was here! So that the boys could play with their own toys when they weren't needed, we shot Thayz's newborn session in the comfort of their own home - although it was such a stinking hot day, it was difficult to be comfortable anywhere! Thank you also to Thayz for a little "behind the scenes" shot while I was working too (see below). The 3 young boys did so well under such sticky, humid conditions and we managed to capture some lovely family images for the family to treasure. Thayz says: "Booked a maternity and newborn photo session with Hilary. Can't praise her work enough. She was very patient with both our boys (4 and 1 yr olds) during the maternity session. The newborn shoot was in our house, the day couldn't be hotter! Our 1 yr old was in the worst mood possible and Hilary was the most understanding photographer on Earth that day! If you think newborns are hard to photograph, well....siblings aren't easier! How she managed to get a photo with him not screaming is beyond me! Will definitely hire her services again if needed!" Thank you so much, Simpson Family!! |
