Like a good doggie-mama, I try to walk our dogs several times a week. Mostly short walks to collect the kids from the school bus, an occasional longer one if we have time. One thing I have learned with an English Bull Terrier though, is that they will only walk ON THEIR TERMS. Most dogs will go wherever you lead them, and with enthusiasm, right? Not our Yoh-si. If we head in a direction that she doesn't want to go? Stops dead and refuses to move. She wants to sniff something but we're in a hurry? Stops dead and refuses to move. Need to get off the road in a hurry because a car is coming? Stops dead and refuses to move. She even digs her heels in when you try to drag her along. I've tried bringing treats along - she learns that stopping gets her more treats. I've tried using my bossy voice - no response. I've tried dragging her. My husband said I'm not being firm enough with her, but then he tried, and got the same result!! I'm sure the neighbours must be laughing at me whenever they drive past, and they see me trying to heave our stubborn pup along :D I will keep persisting though - surely she will lose the stubborn streak eventually! I met Brianna earlier this year for a beautiful maternity portrait session here at Tamborine. The kangaroos were out so we were able to incorporate them into the session to create a lovely rural theme. Brianna brought along a lovely floral headpiece, along with her hat, which gave her several different looks - what a stunning mama-to-be!! And then we waited for her little man to arrive... Greyson! Such a little cutie - he was a superstar on the day of his newborn session - full of sleepy smiles. He posed beautifully in mum's hat too - and Brianna brought along a little rocking horse - see below - he was actually posed very safely on a beanbag, and then the two images (rocking horse + baby) were Photoshopped together in a composite image. Thank you so much for the amazing cuddles, Greyson! Here are some of the favourites from his session:

In another instalment of "funny things my kids say" - here's one that Master 8 delivered last week which gave us a chuckle: We were shopping for some kids clothes and ended up in Cotton On kids. They had some cool retro/band t-shirts and Master 8 was particularly taken with a "Nirvana" shirt he'd found. At that stage, he knew a grand total of ONE Nirvana song, but I was pleased with the fact that he at least knew who they were... So we bought the t-shirt and went home. Master 8 was super excited to run in and tell dad: "DADDY! I got a NEVADA t-shirt!!" Blank looks from daddy... "a what? A t-shirt about the US state?" "NEVADA! You know, the band, Nevada!" ************************* On a related note, one of miss 10's friends was in our car last week and a Nirvana song came on the Spotify list. Miss 10 was super excited to find that her friend knew the song - to which the friend replied: "Oh yeah I know this song! This is one of the first songs I ever listened to from the olden days!" Now - do you feel old?? On a stunning afternoon earlier this year, I was so privileged to capture Amanda & Jason's maternity/family session before the arrival of the newest member of their family. Such a beautiful time in their lives! The sun was absolutely amazing and we savoured every moment of it, capturing these precious memories and moments, what a gorgeous family! When baby Summer arrived, we did her newborn photography session in her home on Tamborine Mountain - she is just perfection! The soft pink tones, whites, earthy and boho elements suited her and the family just perfectly. Big brother Cruze was very proud to have his photos taken with his new baby sister - he loved watching on as we created these images of her. I also loved including their cute little dog in some of their photos. Here are some of the favourites from the day... If you enjoyed this, you might also like:

A packet doesn't last too long when they're having a few each day! (Also when hubby decides he loves them too and cant stop eating them haha). So the other day the kids were playing a car-racing game on the Nintendo - I heard them giggling to each other while they were searching for a race track to try. I asked them what was so funny? Master 8 replied "Oh mummy - there's a race track named after a biscuit! Its called Monte Carlo!" Its always fabulous when clients return for another session as their little families grow... so it was amazing to catch up with Steph, Keenan and little Winter again as they awaited the arrival of their newest family member! I first met this lovely family when they were pregnant with Winter and then for her newborn session - and just look at her now! We were blessed with some gorgeous morning light on the day of the session, giving that beautiful golden glow on this stunning mum! :) Not too long after this, little Alfie arrived! Just 11 days new on the day of his session, he had a lovely snooze while we captured these memories with his family. Winter was super excited to have her photo taken with her new baby brother - love her expressions in the photos of them together! Do you remember your 10th birthday? Being double digits is pretty cool, right? For me, I'm pretty sure that was the year that I received a camera as a present. A slim rectangular Hanimex 110, with film, in red! Anyway, missy decided that what she really wanted for her birthday was a girly shopping day! So when the big day arrived, off we went, armed with some birthday money and a list a mile long. She wanted to look at earrings, hats, chokers, clothes, a diary, shoes, swimmers, hair scrunchies, sunglasses... and so we shopped til we dropped! It was actually a great learning experience about getting value for money too, and not just throwing her cash at the first thing she saw. Surprisingly, it was over an hour before she spent her first dollar!
I loved capturing Tahlia & Peter at their maternity and newborn sessions here at Tamborine recently! Its always an honour to be part of such a special time in your life, to hear of the excitement as the big day approaches when you get to meet your little one for the first time! What beautiful moments to treasure, before their baby boy arrived! And then their little man was here! Gorgeous little Malakye was 13 days new on the day of his session - and just so perfect! Dad Peter brought along his firefighters helmet and it was lovely to be able to incorporate that part of their lives into the session. Never paid it much thought actually - you turn on the tap and its just there, an endless supply. That was of course until we moved to Tamborine and had to rely on tank water - and now I have become positively obsessed about it. Last week we only had about 30 days of water left before we completely run out. Showers have become a race - I have a 3 minute timer in there, and the challenge is on to be out before the timer finishes. Everything is done with sparing water in mind. Wash the dishes with 1/3 of a sink of water. Flush only when necessary. Wash cars and water the garden NEVER!! I cant tell you how excited we were last Saturday night when we received 4mm of rain... and then the next day, another 10mm! Hubby had the calculator out, working out the square metre-age on all our roofs and figuring out exactly how much water that gave us in the tanks. The topic of conversation at school drop offs has become "How good was that rain on the weekend?" and "How many mils did you get?" And after 3 and a half years living here, we've finally had to buy a tanker of water... and fingers crossed that gets us through until we get some decent rain! I first met Michelle, Jason and little Hudson at their maternity session at Tamborine - we had the most beautiful afternoon light and what a gorgeous family! Here are some of the favourites from this session: Not long after this, little Ashton arrived, and on his due date too, which doesn't seem to happen very often! The session was held when he was 10 days old - such a cute little man! I love the look on big brother Hudson's face in these - he loved posing with his new baby brother. Thanks guys for asking me to capture these memories for you! If you enjoyed this, you might also like:

Not one single desire to play any kind of instrument. Hubby is much the same. If I pick up a guitar, I can pluck out a few strangled notes of a tune... and if I sit at a keyboard and work at it for half an hour, I can bang out a version of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" - but nope, I would say I am NOT musically inclined at all. So its pretty cool to see that miss 8 has perhaps inherited the musical gene! This year she tried out for the school instrumental program for 2019, and after a few tests, has been accepted and allocated the flute. Miss 8 is the kind of kid that wants to be involved in EVERYTHING. There is never any need to encourage or coax her to do an activity. She wants to do everything that's on offer - regardless of whether her friends are doing it - she's a determined young lady and I think that's so cool. She has way more confidence than I'll ever have! So next year will be an exciting one for her - hopefully she wont need too much prompting to practice, and hopefully it wont be too painful to listen to! One stunning mum with her beautiful family, a breathtaking location, one gorgeous horse and a glorious sunset - could you seriously ask for anything more in a maternity session? This beautiful farm at Wonglepong was the backdrop for some amazing maternity images - it was lovely to be able to help create these memories for Teneal, Mark and Braylen! From the little creek bed (my first time shooting in ankle deep running water - careful not to slip!!) to Teneal's beautiful horse, and all the fun moments with little Braylen... we had a blast! Here are some favourites from this gorgeous maternity session: And then before we knew it, gorgeous baby Rowan was here! What a sweet little man, and just look how proud big brother Braylen is, so exciting to have a baby brother to play with! We even incorporated some cowboy boots into the session. Thank you so much Teneal, I loved capturing these precious memories for you all! If you enjoyed this, you might also like:

Beaudesert Maternity Photographer Wonglepong Tamborine Pregnancy Photos Canungra Newborn Baby photographer Baby photos newborn portraits Baby photographer Gold Coast Boyland Biddaddaba Birnam Mundoolun So we're in week 2 of the school holidays already, and today the fighting has reached epic proportions. My two are normally pretty good friends and I have to say that miss 8 usually has the patience of a saint when dealing with her little brother - but today they are both tired from a big day yesterday and miss 8 has developed a snotty nose - so tempers are flaring and master 6 knows how to push her buttons. Today, master 6's goals seem to be: Follow my sister around and mess up everything in her path. Oh so you want to tidy away your pens? Let me tip them out again and rummage through them. So you want to draw? Let me grab the paper off you and rip it. You want to quietly watch a movie? Let me jump all over you, make lots of noise so you cant hear it, and push your buttons so that you spend your day whining and complaining to mummy about me being so annoying. My initial reaction was to roar at him and yell at him repeatedly and send him away... Then it dawned on me that he was really looking for attention and obviously feeling like he wasn't getting any. So instead of yelling, I took him aside for a big long cuddle instead. And after a little chat, we were all feeling a lot calmer and they both agreed to play nicely instead of fighting. And so far, several hours later, they are back to being good friends. Sometimes I need to remember that yelling is not the answer... sometimes a little love is really what they need. It was a match made in heaven - take one beautiful mum-to-be, a gorgeous and photogenic 2 year old, a stunning location and a glorious sunlit afternoon - and the end result is something really special! Rebecca's maternity session at Boyland was a photographers dream, I loved exploring this amazing property and capturing these sun-filled images. Rebecca's husband Mark stayed behind the scenes and watched his lovely ladies enjoy the limelight for the afternoon. We chatted and explored and followed the light, little Scarlett had some fun chasing bubbles and enjoyed snuggling up to mum with her wedding veil - it was so much fun spending time with such a lovely family, and I didn't want it to end! Some kind words from Rebecca: "Hilary is a little hidden gem at the bottom of Mt Tamborine. I was recommended her by a friend and I couldn't be happier with the photos. I had asked Hilary to come to our family farm for a certain style and lighting that I had seen and she captured it perfectly (even better than I could of imagined.) I cried when I saw the photos they were just beautiful. Hilary was wonderful with my toddler and very patient with us, I felt comfortable around her from our very first phone call. I didn't know photoshoots could be so much fun. I'm so in love with the moments she captured and I now have them locked in time. The expression on my daughters face is priceless." Thank you so much Rebecca! The excitement levels have reached level 10 here last week... when miss 8 was told that I am taking her to see Katy Perry on Friday - her very first concert! (I had to wait until I was 17 to go to my first concert - which was The Cure, by the way - so I think she is one very lucky 8 year old!). She's loved Katy Perry for ages, always her favourite singer, so last year when we heard that she was coming I jumped at the chance to get some tickets with two lovely friends and their daughters - a girls night out! But keeping this a secret for a year has been tough!! I planted the seed a few weeks ago, when we heard the radio station talking about the upcoming tour. We started talking about it and she was all like: "Wait - what? She's coming HERE?" Me - "Yep! That would be an amazing concert, wouldn't it?" Miss 8 - "OH MY GOSH - CAN WE GO???" Me - "Oh sorry Bubba, I think the tickets sold out ages ago" Cue misery... (Am I a nasty mother for doing that??) So with less than two weeks to go, I gave her a challenge. She had 2 stars remaining on her star chart before she got to the "reward star". I told her if she achieved those 2 stars in one day, and it had to be a mammoth effort, she would receive an AMAZING reward. Well, she worked her butt off! She picked up dog poo, tidied her room (even vacuumed the floor without being asked), did some maths revision, made her own lunch, washed all the lunch dishes, and was just generally super helpful all day - so yes she earned her reward! The response? Think jumping up and down, clapping her hands, shrieking "YES!", and hugs for everyone. Totally worth it - cant wait to share this experience with her :) Beautiful mama-to-be Sara came to Tamborine for her maternity session recently - absolutely glowing and due to have twins!! The sun was playing a little game of hide-and-seek that day, so we ventured further down our property to the little dam - an area I dont often shoot at, for these images. Some of Sara's favourites: Not long afterwards, I got to meet these very precious twins, Matilda & Xavier! They spent a little time in the special care nursery, so they were 3 weeks and 1 day old at the time of their session - but still very sleepy and tiny! Posing twins can be a bit more of a challenge, but these two made it so easy and did everything I asked of them. Those sweet smiles and gorgeous twin cuddles made for many "awwww" moments during the session. Thanks so much Sara & Mitchell! I've been talking to friends recently about going clothes shopping... for me - not the kids! Its been a while and I have a few things on my list. But the realisation dawned on me yesterday that despite having a wardrobe full of clothes, I consistently wear the same things, week after week! And the things on my list to buy, are simply newer versions of things I already own! I pretty much have my own "mum-uniform" - jeans, long sleeve t-shirt, and the same jacket each and every day. I must have about a dozen pair of jeans, sometimes I might change it up by wearing a different kind of top, but essentially its the SAME...OLD...THING. Do you do this too? So this morning I challenged myself to come up with an outfit that was different to my standard mum-uniform. I had thought of wearing a summer dress with tights, but my eye was drawn to a long skirt which I've rarely ever worn - so I thought "Stuff it!" and put it on. Added some ankle boots, a denim jacket (also rarely worn) and the outfit was done. I must say, I feel quite self-conscious, but in a good way! I'm going to keep challenging myself to stay away from jeans this week, and see what else I can come up with! Alexis, Jayk & Kaia came for their maternity/family session at Tamborine earlier this year - we were blessed with beautiful, stunning afternoon light for this gorgeous family as they eagerly awaited the arrival of their little man! Here are a few of our favourites from this session: Soon after, their sweet little man Luca arrived! Our session in the studio was just perfect - big sister Kaia was amazing and so photogenic - just look at those eyes! Luca, just 9 days old on the day of his session, was a newborn superstar and did everything I asked of him, and more! From that button nose to those cute little toes... he was a joy to photograph! Alexis says: "Hilary did such an amazing job capturing our family in both a maternity and newborn photo shoot. She was so patient and kind with both kids and really took her time to get the perfect shots! Every single photo was beautiful, we can’t recommend her enough" Thank you Plotkin family for allowing me to capture these precious memories for you! If you enjoyed this, you might also like:
Blog: A Crossfit photoshoot... Blog: Bookweek - the lazy mum edition... At the moment, we're having a relatively low-key school holidays, and I'm totally fine with that. Last weekend we went away for the night with friends, so this week I just wanted to have a few "home days" to get some things accomplished. The kids aren't totally thrilled with home days though, so I tempted them with a couple of old movies that they've wanted to watch for ages... the dreaded MUSICAL! Hubby hates musicals so he just rolled his eyes when I mentioned them. In fact, he walked in while one of them was playing, and promptly turned around and walked back out again! So this week I've treated the kids to three all-time classics: Annie Mary Poppins The Sound of Music I have not watched Annie since I was about 10, so that was a bit of a trip down memory lane!! I love Mary Poppins too, but I was curious to see how they would cope with The Sound of Music... given how long it is and how a lot of the plot points would go over their heads... well they loved it! Master 6 was quite fidgety towards the end (but it IS a pretty long movie) and Miss 8 cringes whenever there is a kissing scene, but overall it was a great success! And much to hubby's disgust, we've all been walking around the house singing musical songs all week :) I loved hanging out with Shayne, Nick and Alyssia for their maternity/family session with Shayne's gorgeous bump! Miss Alyssia is the sweetest little thing and those shy smiles were just so priceless. We were treated to some stunning afternoon light too - check out these favourites! And then beautiful newborn Amelia arrived and it was time for her newborn session! We held this session in the comfort of their own home, which meant Alyssia could play with her toys and do her own thing when she wasn't needed. Newborn Amelia was quite alert and wasn't keen on sleeping unless she was very firmly wrapped, but we were still able to get plenty of variety in her session and lots of family combinations too! Shayne's kind words: "Hilary done our maternity and newborn photos. The photos were just amazing! She was very patient and made us feel very comfortable. My husband liked the fact Hilary was quick with the photos. I could not recommend Hilary enough for any photos that your wanting done." Thanks so much to Shayne for capturing these "behind the scenes" photos of me at work with little Amelia! |
