Teachers have told us that most kids will have a tendency to do better at either English, or Maths. Miss 6 has a very definite leaning towards English, just like her mummy. And just like her mummy, maths is a weakness. I dread the day she starts bringing home maths homework, daddy will have to help her with that! With this newfound ability to read and write, she spends her spare time writing letters to friends, teachers and family members, drawing funny cartoons to go with them and being much more aware of the written word in general. She loved the TV show "The Spelling Bee" when it was on, and constantly requested new words from us to try to spell out loud! But with everything that is cool about being able to read, there are a few disadvantages in my view. She has a habit of peering over my shoulder sometimes when I'm scrolling through Facebook. If I don't realise she's behind me, I may stop and read something that is entirely inappropriate for a 6 year old to read, and then come her questions! Last week as she got ready to brush her teeth, she spotted a new tube of adult toothpaste: "Mummy! This says it will whiten my teeth in 14 days!!" Don't believe everything you read, kid! Another drawback is that we can no longer spell out words when we're talking about something secret in front of them, such as what Santa will be bringing the kids for Christmas. You cant spell "S.A.N.T.A" without her big ears flapping and suddenly she becomes very interested in an adult conversation! Did it surprise you how quickly your kids learned to read? This week's blog post features Nicky and her family, we spent a lovely morning at the Botanic Gardens on Tamborine Mountain, such a cool place to explore and run around, as Lincoln discovered! I love all the little hidden treasures, nestled in amongst nature, a bridge here, a pond or a carved statue there - so much to see! Make a wish!! Thanks for a fun morning guys!
